PARKER, CO, 2007. A photograph of Leia Ryan Baum placed just inside Sgt. Ryan John Baum's uniform on his chest for visitation at the Parker Funeral Home. Ryan was killed in action in Karmah, Iraq May 18. “That's all he wanted to do, is come home and put her [Leia] on his chest,” said Dana Baum, Ryan's mother. Ryan was scheduled to return home to be present for the birth of his daughter, who was born May 29. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division and left for the Middle East on Oct. 7, 2006. Baum's family in Aurora established the SGT Ryan John Baum Memorial Fund, with all proceeds going to help Amber and Leia Baum. (Photo: Barry Gutierrez / Rocky Mountain News)
